Every Thursday afternoon a group of students from ILE pile in Steve’s van and head out to a poverty stricken area of San Jose. Today started out no differently. We were bombarded with hugs and kisses from the children as we got off the van. We met for briefing and prayer before we began. The story today was from the Gospel of Mark – Jesus and the children. After the story, we broke up into small groups and were working our worksheets when one young girl, 11 years old, asked me about the New Testaments I had. She asked what they were and I told her the book was where we got the Bible story for the day. I helped her to find the passage in Mark and turned back to help the other children with their pages. I happened to notice out of the corner of my eye that she was reading the passage. I went about my work and when she finished reading the passage she closed the New Testament handed it back to me and said “Que linda” which in Spanish means “how beautiful”. I could not hold back the tears as I thought how many times have I finished reading the word of the Lord and closed the book with the words – how beautiful. Pray for the children in La Carpio. That the beautiful word of the Lord will change their hearts and lives.
